鼎足而立dǐng zú ér lìstand like the legs of a tripod—a tripartite balance of forces
❍ 诚能听臣之计，莫若两利而俱存之，叁分天下，鼎足而居，其势莫敢先动。(《史记·淮阴侯列传》2623) If you follow my plan,however,you can take advantage of both sides and divide the land into three with them like the three legs of a tripod so that neither of the others dare make the first move.
❍ 蜀有三川之险，吴有三江之固：若二国连和，共为唇齿，进则可以兼吞天下，退则可以～。(《三国演义》736) Now Shu has the strength of its geographical difficulties just as Wu has the protection of its three rives. If these two countries are at peace they are mutually protective. They may swallow up the rest of the empire,or they may stand like the legs of a tripod. |
