揜yǎn[书] Ⅰ ❶（用网捕捉） catch with a net: ～ 禽旅 use nets to catch birds
❷（承袭） adopt; follow; inherit: 教诲开导成王， 使谕于道而能 ～ 迹于文、武。 Teach and enlighten King Cheng, make him understand principles and be able to inherit the achieverments of King Wen and King Wu.
❸ （夺去） take away: 怯者夜见立表， 以为鬼也， 风寝石， 以为虎也， 惧 ～ 其气也。 At night, when a coward saw an erect carved column he thought of it as a ghost. When he saw a stone, he regarded it as a tiger. Fear took away his courage.
❹ （遮蔽） cover; obscure; hide: 瑕不 ～ 瑜。 The defects cannot obscure the virtues.Ⅱ （困迫） embarassed; awkward: 君子慎以辟祸， 笃以不 ～， 恭以远耻。 To a gentleman, carefulness can avoid misfortune, earnest can avoid embarassment, and politeness can avoid shame. |
