付诸洪乔fù zhū hóng qiáoget the letters lost
❍ 殷洪乔作豫章郡，临去，都下人因附百许函书。既至石头，悉掷水中，因祝曰：“沉者自沉，浮者自浮，殷洪乔不能作致书邮。” (刘义庆《世说新语·任诞》) When Yin Xian was appointed grand warden of Yuzhang Comman dery,on the eve of his departure to take up his post the people of the capital (Jiankang) took the occasion to entrust him with a hundred or more letters. After he reached Shitou he threw them all into the water.As he did so he muttered the following incantation:“Let those that sink sink,|And those that float float;But Yin Xian never can|Become a mailman.” |
